An Update on Hernandez’s Condition

From TNAwrestling.com – As the world witnessed on Monday night on TNA “iMPACT” on SpikeTV, Hernandez was injured at the hands of “The Blueprint” Matt Morgan when Morgan used his “Carbon Footprint” finishing move on Hernandez against the wrestling ring’s steel post, kicking Hernandez in the head and causing an instant blackout.

The match was quickly stopped by the referee, and medical officials immediately placed Hernandez in a protective neck brace, then loaded him onto a stretcher for quick transport to a local Orlando hospital.

TNAwrestling.com has learned that Hernandez was released from the hospital early Thursday morning after a few nights of precautionary observation. He has suffered a herniated disc and cervical damage to his neck. Unfortunately, TNA Wrestling management has informed us that Hernandez is out of action indefinitely. We wish him well in his recovery, and we will continue to update fans on his condition.

The status of the TNA World Tag Team Championship is still to be determined. Matt Morgan currently claims ownership of both titles.

Morgan makes his way out to the ring first, with both belts in hand, but Hernandez immediately attacks from behind, and beats Morgan up and down the ramp before tossing him into the ring. The bell rings and this one is official as Hernandez destroys Morgan with a huge shoulder block that sends him to the outside. Hernandez follows and he goes to work with a series of right hands, before slamming Morgan into the barricade, then head first into the steel ring steps. Hernandez backs Morgan into the ring apron, and continues to work him over with forearms before sending him back into the ring. Morgan begs off, asking Hernandez to stop. Morgan offers his hand, but Hernandez kicks him in the chest instead. Hernandez wraps his shirt around Morgan’s neck and tosses him across the ring twice. Hernandez waits for Morgan to get up before hitting a big splash in the corner and a one-handed spine buster. Hernandez charges Morgan in the corner, but Morgan counters with a back body drop that sends Hernandez over the top to the floor.

Hernandez drags Morgan out to the floor, and he tries for a clothesline, but Morgan ducks and Hernandez connects with the ring post. While Hernandez is next to the post, Morgan connects with a carbon footprint to the side of Hernandez’s head, sandwiching it against the ring post. The referee goes to check on Morgan, and he throws up the “X” symbol, but it looks worked. They bring out medics and a stretcher. Homicide is also out, and people in the crowd look extremely upset. Tenay calls for a commercial break.

Back from commercial and they get Hernandez up onto the stretcher. After a second commercial break, they’re replaying the injury, Hernandez being put on the stretcher, and him being put in the back of the ambulance.

Beer Money, Inc. vs. Hernandez/Matt Morgan
TNA Tag Team Championship

BMI are the first team to the ring, and they still get a fairly decent reaction, even though they’ve been pushed as heels over the past few weeks. Matt Morgan and Hernandez are out to the ring next, with Hernandez walking ahead of, and not waiting for, Morgan. Morgan and Roode look to start things out for their teams, and we get the bell, this one’s ready to start. Morgan tags out to Hernandez immediately, and they begin to argue. Hernandez and Roode lock up, and Super Mex backs up Roode into the corner, but he breaks clean. Roode hits a couple of boots, and turns things around, pounding on Hernandez in the corner. Roode tries for a cross body, but Hernandez catches him and puts him in powerbomb position. Roode fights out, but he walks into a shoulderblock. Roode is finally able to take Hernandez off his feet with a flying forearm, and Morgan tags himself in, saying ‘watch me’.

The Finish

Storm locks in a rear chin lock, but Hernandez fights out of it. Storm is able to connect with an inverted tornado DDT, but he can’t keep Hernandez down for three. Hernandez is able to hit Storm with a big slingshot shoulderblock into the ring from the apron, and both men are down. Hernandez tries to crawl over to Morgan, and he’s able to make the tag. Morgan comes in and goes to work on both members of BMI, hitting a big splash on Storm in the corner, and trying for a chokeslam on Roode, but hitting a big lariat when Roode fights out of it. Morgan tags Hernandez back in, and he immediately hits the big dive to the outside on Roode. Morgan calls Hernandez dumb and rolls him back into the ring, and the teammates continues to argue. Hernandez ducks a beer spit from Storm and it hits Morgan. Hernandez connects with the border toss, and he pins Roode, putting him down for the three.

After the match, Morgan hits Hernandez with the carbon footprint, and he holds up both belts, leaving the ring and walking to the back with both.

Fan Interaction Update

Added another fan submission to The Song Game.

And in case you’re not following the site on Twitter (it’s also on the sidebar in case you don’t have Twitter or Myspace), I asked you guys which one you’d rather the site have: a Facebook page or a forum/message board, or possibly both. If either one gets selected, I’ll more than likely hand-pick a fan (or two, if the forum gets chosen) to help out, so be sure and let me know what you think. Poll notwithstanding, the results are currently Facebook: 1 vote; both: 1 vote.

Refugio’s Hernandez draw strength from pro wrestler father

Proud pops Shawn Hernandez passed along this Caller.com article about his daughter Liz, who is doing very well in high school weightlifting! So right now, I want to send out a congratulations to Liz and to encourage her to keep doing well!

It’s no secret where Refugio senior powerlifter Liz Hernandez gets her competitive edge and intensity from.

That comes from Hernandez’s father, Shawn, who is a professional wrestler and a former Texas A&I-Kingsville football player.

Shawn still gives Liz plenty of pep talks on the telephone even though he hasn’t been able to watch her compete much the past two years because of his demanding travel schedule. The 37-year-old Hernandez wrestles for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on television’s Spike network on Thursday nights.

“She has a great chance to win (the state championship) this year and I’m so proud of her,” the 6-foot-2, 285 pound Shawn said of Liz. “She walks on her toes just like I do and her legs are stout. She’s like watching a (smaller) female version of myself, although she has a ways to go to catch up to her old man (whose max is more than 800 pounds) in squats.”

The 5-foot-2 Liz, who won the silver medal in Class 2A at 181 pounds this past year, will compete for the state championship in her weight class in Friday’s Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet at the American Bank Center. The Class 2A meet begins at 9:15 a.m. Friday.

“Winning a state championship would mean everything to me,” the 17-year-old Hernandez said. “I’ve worked so hard and I deserve it. I don’t want second place — I want first and I think I want it more than anyone. ”

Liz (who lifted a combined personal best 905 pounds at the Region V-2A meet in Carrizo Springs recently, which included a 375-pound squat, a 350-pound dead lift and a 180-pound bench press) placed second at last year’s state meet behind Leonard High School’s Felicia Corbin (who lifted a combined 870 pounds but has since graduated). Hernandez had a 330-pound squat, 150-bench press and 340-pound dead lift for a combined 820 pounds at last year’s state meet.

Monique Solis of San Diego (who lifted a combined 880 pounds at regionals) is seeded second behind Hernandez in 2A coming into this year’s state meet, while Pam Williams of Arp (865 pounds at the Region III-2A meet) and Jennifer Moran of Brady (850 at the Region II-2A meet), last year’s bronze medalist at state, are seeded third and fourth respectively.

“Last year, Liz was trailing people and needed to make up ground at the meet. This year, she’s leading the pack and so if she goes out and does what she can do — she’s going to be a state champion,” said Refugio first-year powerlifting coach Steve Heryford, who previously coached powerlifting at San Angelo Central High School.

Bobcats senior Dylan Klare, who won the 2A state championship in boys powerlifting at the 275-pound weight class last year, feels good about Hernandez’s chances of duplicating his state title in the sport for the school.

“She has a real good shot this year,” Klare said of Hernandez. “She’s put a lot into it and that hard work is going to pay off for her.”

Hernandez — who’s in her second year of powerlifting and hopes to continue competing in the sport in college, possibly at the University of Texas-San Antonio — has trained nearly 10 hours a week to prepare for the state meet.

While Hernandez said she will miss not having her Dad watch her in person this weekend, she understands.

“I really wish he could be here but I understand that he has a career as well,” Liz said of Shawn, who played linebacker for Texas A&I-Kingsville from 1990-92.

Hernandez said she plans to do something special at the meet in his absence.

“Win one for Dad,” Liz said with a smile.
